The Pender Harbour & District Health Centre Auxiliary Society runs the Bargain Barn Thrift Store. It's profits help support our local Health Centre’s projects, equipment, and operations. These include the seniors’ initiative Harbourside Friendships, the Diabetic Group and bursaries for local high school students.
During the fiscal year ending March 31, 2026, our Health Centre received $115,000 from the Bargain Barn’s annual profits.
The Auxiliary Society was incorporated on July 7, 2016, continuing the original Auxiliary founded in 1976—marking 50 years of volunteer service to the community.
The Bargain Barn also offers the community an environmentally friendly way to support fundraising through recycling, reusing, repurposing, and upcycling. They do such a tremendous job with recycling and in fact, put nothing into our landfill.
The Society and Thrift Store is run by volunteers, guided by an elected Board and store committee.
Over the past 50 years, the Bargain Barn Thrift Store has undergone several improvements, including a major renovation in 2004 and a backroom addition in 2013. It is now planning exterior painting and new interior flooring. Donations of more than $100 are eligible for a tax receipt. Contact the Auxiliary at [email protected] to contribute.
Since it began, the Auxiliary has donated an estimated $1.3 million, with nearly half of that total contributed in the past ten years. The Bargain Barn is the Auxiliary’s main source of income. As well as keeping the store functioning, their volunteers spend countless hours organizing their annual fashion show, fashion exchange, crafted item promotions, their eBay store, china and art sales.
The enduring success of the Thrift Store is built on the commitment and enthusiasm of volunteers who devote their time to a variety of essential tasks—whether assisting customers in the store, sorting and processing donations, or carefully pricing items in the backroom and showcasing them in the store. No matter your availability, whether it’s three or ten hours a month, or your interest in joining the Board or a committee, there are always rewarding and worthwhile opportunities to contribute. The Bargain Barn proudly stands by its slogan: “The finest and friendliest thrift store on the Sunshine Coast,” a testament to the remarkable dedication of its volunteers. Our student bursaries are as follows:
- The Muriel Cameron Bursary, which consists of two $2,000 bursaries paid annually to graduating students who are entering a health related career.
- The Linda Curtiss Student Citizenship Award, which is one $1,000 scholarship awarded annually to students from grade 9 to 12 who have performed volunteer or community work in the Pender Harbour area and, during this time, applied leadership and inter-personal skills which will be measured in order to qualify. This volunteer or community work is to include working in any organization which has been approved by the Auxiliary Society for the Health Centre.
In honor of our past Presidents, our parent Auxiliary created a PRESIDENT’S LEARNING CENTRE at the Health Centre. Its purpose is to provide a place where one can go to learn about a specific medical condition. Current books are available, as well as other learning aids.
